Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend! We had tons of rain and wind here - very nasty! It’s supposed to be nice here today, back to our Spring weather. It was brought to my attention over the weekend that my download links are being shared in Yahoo groups. Now, I have a note on EVERY post about not sharing my links. I have no problem with people sharing the link to my blog for people to pick up my freebies, but all I ask is that they actually come HERE to download them. This is a perfect example of why so many designers don’t like to share freebies!

Another thing that’s been bothering me, and some have actually left comments about it here. When I post a freebie here, all I ask for is a comment if you download my freebies - just a simple thank you. Just as an example, the bent frame cluster freebie had over 2200 downloads, but only 145 comments. I’m no mathematician, but that’s not a very good ratio! I don’t really think it’s that much to ask to have folks leave a comment. I mean, it takes what - 20 seconds to leave a “Thank You!” One could be leaving a comment while the freebie is downloading.

OK, enough with that… I just had to get all of that off my chest.

Traci, I’m so sorry to hear that now you are having trouble with people pirating your designs! I just don’t understand #1 why people just don’t send them here to your blog, and #2 what is the big deal to stop and simply say “thank you”. I guess some just never learned their manners! I just have to say, that I have that same problem when I give something away!! So I wish you the best of luck getting a better ratio of comments!!! LOL I also just found out that a couple sets of my frames had been pirated. They actually took my name off of them, and then uploaded them again. Thats just sooooooo not right! I’m sorry you are having trouble with it, you are so generous with your freebies! Thanks for that!!

Thanks, Traci! I love this element. I’m also sorry you’re having pirating issues. I honestly don’t understand why people insist on doing things like that. It’s just as easy to give people your blog link. I guess there are always going to be people who can’t play by the rules and eventually ruin it for us that do.

First off ..I want to thank you so much for the cool freebie!!I love it!.
Second..I know how you feel about your designs being pirated.I discovered someone I shall not name..she wasn’t too smart..her email address was on 4shared.LOL Anyway..she put ALL of my Valentines QP into two folders and uploaded them to 4shared and had them named “Valjs Valentines Frames” Anyone who had those links could totally bypass my blog and get them.At least she left my name on the files.I gotta give that to her..But she no longer is allowed to use 4shared.That may be a deterant for some scrappers who think this is okay to do.:)

Wow, 2200? I don’t even physically know anybody else that scrapbooks digitally. I’m so sorry that you were stolen from; however, that was a super cool freebie as is this one. I hope that you don’t get too frustrated with the few bad apples. Too bad there isn’t a better, more secure way to share.

It might help to get more comments if you had the 4-shared link open in a new window - I know I frequently forget to come back after downloading a freebie because I forget to use the back button. If it was still open, I would remember better. Thank you for this frame, it looks great. I love having the work done for me already, thinking is not my strong point right now!

It’s a shame people can’t abide by the rules. I guess it happens everywhere no matter what line of work you are in.

I was wondering, could you do a kind of tutorial on how we designers can find out if our links are being shared? I am a member of one yahoo group and everyone on there only lists their own freebies and links to their blogs. I was curious what these other yahoo groups are and if my scrappy pony stuff is being shared that way. That is too bad about the sharing thing. I know people can read if they find their way to the blog. I don’t think it would take any longer to share your blog link then it is to share the link to the freebie–who can figure? Also, you are right that leaving a comment is so easy and fast. I usually do it while I am waiting for the link to come up to download.

hi traci - thanks for sharing this fab frame & for all your prior freebs — i try to leave my thanks every time, but my own personal ratio is only about 50% because of time {my own selfishness to see all the new goodies on the digi blogs/sites each day after work & before dinner/baths/cleaning etc}. i will do better. i do appreciate that you have 4shared open in a new window, which does make it easy to leave some love while the file is downloading, you are one of the few who have it linked this way. thanks again!

My other comments:
1. Personally, I have never understood “why” people feel compelled to share rather than send to the point of origin. That truly has never made ANY sense to me and I’ve never seen any explanation other than they’re “pirates”. “Why” are they doing it is what I’d really like to
know? What is the advantage?
2. Common courtesty is such a tiny expectation particularly when you try to “make a differenc” and help others. It is such a shame that people do not always live up to our own personal expectations. Sometimes I find it best to expect nothing - then you don’t get as easily dissapointed. Of course I learn this from living with a “teenager” - lol

Take a deep breath Traci, remember what you do, why you do it, how much it is all very much appreciated and “let go” of the negativity. Have a great day and take care. Thanks again.

Oh man Traci. I haven’t visited for a while and of course the first thing is I read is someone is sharing your freebies at yahoo (how despicable!) and that people are downloading but saying proper thank yous. I really don’t understand why people won’t show their appreciation of your talent and hard work!! But anyway… I downloaded the cluster frame and love it!! I really love your work and I’m sorry to read that there are always people who don’t play fair.
I usually leave the love at the download site because for many blogs you need an account to leave a comment, so I quit trying every time.
But I would not download without any comment. Because I highly appreciate the work, time and talent, spent on the creation of these gifts.

Thank you for the cute filmstrip. It is a shame that not everyone leaves a Thank You. I don’t think you will ever find a solution. You are dealing with 3 kinds of people here. The Designers who make wonderful things and give them away, asking for no more than a “Thank You” in return. The Scrappers who make the rounds picking up the things the Designers make, leaving a “Thank You” in return. And last, we have the scrappers, who grab and run with the wonderful things the Designers make and have ask for nothing in return but a “Thank You.”

Well - Traci - you are getting lots of comments here today. I apologize for not leaving more comments - it was easy on the 4-shared site because all I had to do was scroll down and not click to get taken to another page. With dialup - sometimes it takes forever. I have been working on this comment for 5 minutes now - and I do appreciate your work AND thoughtfulness. You know, I’d like to think that all scrappers, given our artistic sensibilities and desire to create something permanent that captures transient moments, would respect an artist’s request not to pass around her work. Even if you’ve convinced yourself it’s not theft, it’s downright rude not to honor the designer’s request about how the art is shared. I guess there are bad people in every group. I wonder if the people who stole your stuff are planning on making layouts for their kids that document their acts of piracy?

Hi Traci,

Thanks for a great film strip. You always make everything so unique. When my children were young (and before digital scrapbooking) I used to print all my own b/w photos. Instead of printing all the individual pictures I would lay all the strips on the enlarger plate and print all the negatives. I would then make postcards to send to my Mom. That way she got many pictures, not just one or two. Oh, the memories!

I had to explain it to them that I couldn’t just give them a link to the download…They are mostly paper scrappers, but thought they would enjoy something that you had once that would be perfect for them to print and cut out!! Sorry about the problems you’re having.
I might be guilty of not always saying thanks- I like to look at full download and document the file first, and I get distracted when I look at all the yummy goodies. (Darn my ADD) I make sure to credit website, email designer and stuff, but don’t always get back for my thank you. I’m very sorry if I’ve done it to you personally.

One idea you might consider. I’m a newbie to going through blogs and using a download like you have for your freebies. I thought you would leave the comment at the actual place you went for the download and since it said “comments disabled” I thought you couldn’t leave one so I didnt’. When I clicked on “comments” at the bottom of your blog entry I only scrolled down a short way. So I didn’t get to the end of the comments to see that that was the place where I could comment. I couldn’t figure out how to contact you to say thank you!! This time I kept going down through the comments and got to the end. (Whew! There sure were a LOT of comments!). So maybe most people aren’t being rude . . . they’re just ingnorant about how to do it?!
Just a thought.
Keep ‘em coming, girl. The freebies are great and much appreciated!

I have been reading your blog for awhile. I’m a new scrapper/computer user. I don’t even know how to use my program yet so can only scrap very basic things. I have read many times that people don’t leave comments. I have wanted to but just finally realized I have to go to the bottom of all the comments to leave one myself. I usually leave comments for designers in the comment section in 4shared. Some designers have this disabled. It’s easy for me to leave a comment while I’m downloading. Why do designers have this disabled? would you consider enabling it. I think you would get more response rate. I know you CERTAINLY deserve it!

Thanks for sharing! I’ve been guilty of the DL and run a few times. I think people think, oh nobody will notice if I don’t leave one this time. What they don’t realize is so many people think that also it hurts the designers in the end. Group owners should also stop allowing direct 4shared links. I think some people honestly don’t know what blog something was on.
