Jordan will be starting kindergarten on Monday, and the school had a Meet the Teacher open house yesterday afternoon. We’d been talking to her about it for the last few day, and her only response was “I don’t want to go to that!” Even yesterday afternoon when I was getting her dressed, she still did not want to go. Sometimes she is so resistant to change and trying new things! So Jordan, Daddy, Nana and me get in the car and drive up to the school - a whole quarter of a mile up the street! If it hadn’t been 100 degrees outside we would have just walked, but I really didn’t want to me Jordan’s teacher looking (and smelling) like a sweaty pig!
So the place is packed - cars everywhere! No room to park in the parking lot or in front of the school, so we parked on a side road and walked over. We looked at the lists that were posted outside and found out who her teacher was going to be. Then we walked inside and got directions to the classroom. Let me tell you - this school is huge! They just added a new addition on last year, so now it’s twice as big as it was. They had the coolest murals painted on all the walls in the hallways!
Anyway, we get to her classroom, and since we got there a little early, there were only a couple of other families in there. Her teacher introduced herself and chatted with Jordan for a minute, and then we just let her explore the room. Now I know it has been a long time since I was in school - especially elementary school, but let me tell you - this room had all kinds of cool stuff! They had a full wooden play kitchen with all kinds of play food, rows and rows of books, tons of craft supplies! All of the kids have their assigned seats at big round tables. There was a little easel that had a sheet of paper on it. At the top it said “How I feel about starting kindergarten” and then it had columns for Happy, Scared, and Not Sure. There were little red dots, and the kids were supposed to put a dot in the column that described how they felt. Jordan put hers in the Not Sure column.
So we stayed in there a while, and then we walked around the rest of the school and showed her the cafeteria, library, art room, music room, gymnasium, and of course the playground. Well, by the time we got done with all of that she wanted to go back to her classroom one more time. When we found our way back (it seemed like a maze!) she told her Daddy that she wanted to move her dot to the Happy column! How sweet is that?? So needless to say, she loves her new school! She can’t wait for Monday to get here - lol!
I hope she doesn’t lose interest after the newness of it all wears off! Hopefully it won’t, because it will make getting her up, dressed and ready for school much easier. When she used to go to daycare, every morning was a battle of the wills to get her up and dressed! I had to come up with excuses every day about why she needed to go to school. It was show and tell day, she had to feed Mrs. Ruffles (the class guinea pig), and other stuff! It got to the point that it was friggin’ ridiculous! And don’t even get me started on what went on when I dropped her off and it was time for me to leave! Ughhh! I hated that - it just makes you feel so guilty!
I’ll have my camera all charged up for that first day of school too - so you know there will be some layouts coming - LOL! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! It’s still hot as blazes here - I’m ready for Winter at this point!

My daughters is starting Kindergarten on Monday as well, and we also had an event last night where we got to meet her teacher and see her classroom, etc. She is very excited about starting school (though I think the full-day schedule will be rough for her at the beginning), and I’m really excited for everything but the fact that she can now learn all kinds of things I might now want her to learn from other kids - and I won’t be able to protect her from it anymore. That’s a little hard to let go of!
I hope Monday goes well and that your daughter adjusts well and loves school!
That is such a cute and sweet story! I’m sure she’ll definitely love school.
I’m sure Jordan will be just fine! How’s Mom going to do?
My daughter is a new teacher this year and it’s fun to hear her perspective. My….the things kids say!
Gosh, that brings back memories from two years ago when my DS started K. He, though, was VERY excited about starting K and after his first day, he said, “Day care was boring. Kindergarten is FUN!” He really enjoys going to school — so far. They had so many activities at daycare (which also was the Pre-school and Pre-K); I think he wanted us to know that he was a BIG boy now! You have your camera ready, but do you have your tissues? I barely got out of DS’ K classroom without crying. But I boo-hooed all the way to work that first day! It wasn’t a matter of us being separated but it was just his reaching yet another milestone. Can’t wait to see pictures, Traci!! Hope all goes well!
I’ll bet you are more reticient about the whole school thing than Jordan on Monday, hope it all goes well, moving her dot is a good omen:)
A moment to scrap for sure. I teach first grade. Tuesday is meet the teacher and we start on the 27th! I hope Jordan has an awesome year!
